Amazing News For UAE Expats: 44% Plan To Retire Right Here In The Emirates

Dubai and Abu Dhabi - A new study titled Money on the Move: UAE by wealth manager St. James's Place shows that a large part of wealthy expats in the United Arab Emirates are moving away from temporary stays. The report used a double-blind online survey of 450 wealthy and high-net-worth residents in May 2026. 44 per cent of respondents now intend to retire within the Emirates. The National and Arabian Business reported these findings between September 9 and September 10, 2026.
* 55 per cent of participants have already stayed in the country longer than their original plans.
* 78 per cent expect to live abroad for at least eight more years.
* 96 per cent earn more in the UAE than in their home countries.
* 97 per cent report higher monthly savings.
Financial Benefits And Savings
97 per cent of residents state that living abroad has accelerated their path to financial independence. Nearly all, 98 per cent, believe that their time in the UAE will enable earlier retirement. Data shows that 64 per cent of respondents would have needed at least five more years to reach financial freedom if they stayed home. 70 per cent believe living abroad will let them retire at least three years earlier than planned. While 59 per cent still expect to eventually return to their home countries, many intend for this to happen after retirement, with the UAE remaining a primary or secondary base.
Planning Gap And Expert Advice
Despite these shifts, a planning gap exists. Only 27 per cent of those surveyed described themselves as highly financially literate regarding complex issues like cross-border pensions, tax residency tests, end-of-service payouts, and inheritance rules. St. James's Place emphasizes that as long-term stays become more common, expats must transition from relying on higher salaries to developing structured long-term financial plans. Oliver Wickham, Partnership Director for SJP Asia & Middle East, supported the report. Katy Gillett of The National and Will Milner of Arabian Business featured the reports.
