Tragic Abu Dhabi Road Accident Claims Life of 17-Year-Old Indian Student

A 17-year-old Indian student, Nabanipa Sinha, died in a road accident in Abu Dhabi while returning home after watching the Perseids meteor shower in the Al Qua area. The accident, which occurred on the morning of August 13, also left her 20-year-old brother, Diptanshu, and their friend, Niranjan, who was driving the car, severely injured. The group was traveling from the Al Qua region, a popular site for stargazing and viewing the Milky Way in the UAE, and had sent a message to their family indicating they were nearly home before the crash occurred. The family had previously advised them to wait until after 5:00 a.m. to drive back to avoid late-night travel.

Background and Student Details

Nabanipa, who was affectionately known as 'Diya' by her family, had recently completed her Grade 12 studies. She was the second topper in her school within the Commerce stream and had secured a 50 percent scholarship to study an Accounting and Finance Honours course at a university in Dubai. Diptanshu, an engineering student in his second year in the United States, was visiting the UAE for the holidays. He was initially admitted to the ICU and has since been moved to a step-down ICU, though he may require further surgeries. The hospital's social service team assisted the family in informing him of his sister's death. Niranjan, who also attends a university in Dubai, remains in the ICU with serious head injuries.

Funeral and Road Safety Advice

Nabanipa's funeral was held on August 18 at the New Sonapur Crematorium in Jebel Ali, Dubai. The Al Qua desert route, where the accident occurred, is known to be popular for nighttime celestial observations, but it has been the site of previous fatalities involving Indian expatriates. Authorities emphasize the importance of road safety, including getting adequate rest before desert drives, avoiding high speeds, wearing seat belts, and remaining vigilant against driver fatigue and visibility issues during late-night or early-morning travel.
