Bahrain Approves Oral Wegovy Pills for Obesity Treatment

Bahrain has officially expanded its medical toolkit for weight management, with the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) granting approval for oral Wegovy (semaglutide) pills. This landmark decision makes the Kingdom the second country in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to authorize the oral formulation, following closely behind the UAE. Globally, Bahrain joins an elite group as only the fifth nation to approve this specific pill version.

A New Option for Patients

The introduction of the once-daily pill is expected to significantly improve patient compliance and accessibility. For many individuals, the prospect of weekly injections can be a barrier to consistent treatment. The oral version provides a convenient alternative for those who prefer a non-invasive method for managing obesity.

According to the Bahrain News Agency (BNA), the medication has been available in pharmacies across the country since mid-September 2026. However, health officials have issued a clear directive: the treatment must be used in conjunction with strict dietary modifications and lifestyle changes, all under the close guidance of healthcare professionals.

Tackling the Obesity Epidemic

The move comes as the region faces a mounting health crisis. Obesity currently affects approximately 35% or more of the adult population in Bahrain and throughout the wider GCC territories. By integrating these advanced medical therapies, the Kingdom aims to address these rising health concerns more effectively.

Expanding the Local Market

The approval of oral Wegovy adds another layer to an already evolving local pharmaceutical market. Patients in the region now have access to a variety of advanced weight management options, including:

  • Wegovy (injectable form)
  • Mounjaro
  • Foundayo (Eli Lilly’s oral treatment)
