According to the Embassy of India, Bahrain's current consular notice,
the e-OCI card has been available for both new applicants and existing physical booklet holders since June 30, 2026. Existing physical booklets remain valid and will continue to be accepted for immigration and associated services. The e-OCI, an electronic version of the OCI card, is issued based on Ministry of Home Affairs records and can be downloaded from the official OCI Services Portal without any fee. Existing holders can generate their e-OCI by logging in with their email address linked to their OCI record. Additionally, the e-OCI can be accessed through the Indian Visa Su-Swagatam mobile application. The Embassy advises keeping an offline digital copy for travel, though physical passports must still be carried at all times. New applicants must follow the standard online registration process via the OCI portal, which may include original document verification at the Embassy. Once granted, notifications are sent via email or SMS. Notably, while standard OCI registration is lifetime-linked, OCI cases involving foreign-origin spouses carry an initial validity of five years.

Holders are no longer required to re-issue their OCI booklet upon obtaining a new passport after reaching 20 years of age. However, they must update their new passport particulars and latest photograph on the OCI portal within three months of receiving the new document. This service is provided gratis if updated within the three-month window. Individuals who receive a new passport after age 20 may be required to provide biometric information, which can be collected at an Indian Mission, FRRO, or an Immigration Post upon their first entry or departure from India. Updating passport details online effectively removes the need to carry old passports for verification, as revised particulars will be reflected in the e-OCI record.
