Work Permit Rules and Employer Guidelines
The LMRA clarified that the possession of a Golden Residency does not replace the requirement for an active, employer-linked work permit for those currently employed. Bahrain Golden Residency Program Categories
The Bahrain Golden Residency program is available to professionals, property owners, retirees, and talented individuals. Professionals must have at least five years of employment in Bahrain with an average monthly basic salary exceeding BHD 2,000, supported by a continuous insurance record with the Social Insurance Organization. Property owners are required to hold individual or combined property assets valued at a minimum of BHD 130,000. Retirees residing in Bahrain must demonstrate 15 years of service and a pension of at least BHD 2,000, while non-resident retirees must show a pension of BHD 4,000 or more. Other categories include entrepreneurs, researchers, scientists, artists, innovators, and athletes, subject to specialized review.
Residency Application Fees and Processing
Applying for Golden Residency remains distinct from the work permit renewal process. New residency applications incur a BHD 5 non-refundable application fee and a BHD 300 issuance fee upon approval. Processing typically takes five working days for employees, property owners, and retirees, while talent-based applications may take up to 10 working days. Applicants must provide valid passports, health insurance, and specific eligibility documentation such as salary proofs, title deeds, or pension evidence.
According to the Indian Embassy in Bahrain, there are approximately 3.5 million Indians in the country, constituting the largest expatriate community. While many Indians work in construction, contracting, and maintenance, a significant number serve as doctors, engineers, bankers, accountants, and managers. This new fast-track renewal policy is specifically limited to Golden Residency holders and does not constitute a blanket rule for all Indian workers or standard residence and work permit holders in the region.
