Amazing Dirham Rate Drives Gulf Remittances While Workers Face Hardships

The UAE dirham has surged past 26.15 Indian rupees, marking one of the strongest exchange rates in years and driving record remittances from Gulf-based Indian workers to their families in states including Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Bihar. While exchange houses in Dubai and Abu Dhabi report a surge in activity, significant security and humanitarian challenges persist for the Indian diaspora.

Missing Workers and Detention Cases

Eight workers from Telangana have disappeared, including Mohammed Sileman who vanished in Oman, Alleswarapu Ramesh in the UAE, Malut Kotaiah in Saudi Arabia, and Bhukya Srikanth missing since June 7 from Dubai. Pravasi Prajavani, Telangana’s grievance cell for Gulf workers, reports that families have lost contact with these individuals. Additionally, Mohammed Afroz of Hyderabad has remained in Jeddah’s Al-Shumaisi Detention Centre for nearly two years, while Salman Fariz of Mysuru is reportedly detained in a Dubai jail following a dispute over unpaid wages and missing travel documents. Activists have petitioned External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar for state intervention.

Security Concerns from Regional Attacks

Security concerns have also intensified following Houthi missile and drone strikes on September 14 targeting Khamis Mushait, Abha, and Taif, cities with significant Indian populations. The attacks resulted in 13 injuries, damaged seven houses and two vehicles, and caused at least one death in Taif by September 17. With over 2.4 million Indian nationals residing in Saudi Arabia, these military actions have created heightened anxiety among the diaspora. Official reports from New Delhi indicate that Indian missions are monitoring the situation, while Gulf governments maintain that labor and wage protection systems are functional.
