Kerala-born designer becomes first Indian expat on UAE stamps
Kerala-born Sharjah designer Muhammad Bilal has made history as the first Indian expat to feature on UAE stamps. Muhammad Bilal, a 28-year-old senior designer at the Sharjah Institute for Heritage originally from Kozhikode, Kerala, has become the first Indian expatriate to have his artwork issued as official commemorative postage stamps by Emirates Post. The six stamps were created based on Bilal's visual identity designs for the 23rd Sharjah Heritage Days, themed “The Glow of Authenticity,” which took place in February 2026. This release marks the first commemorative stamp set produced for the Sharjah Heritage Days event.
Stamp Designs and Inspiration
Bilal, who has worked at the institute for nine years, stated he was initially unaware that his festival branding would be utilized for stamps until he received photographs from the institute’s media head. He expressed being “shocked and super happy” by the honor. The six distinct stamp designs include: 'Cannon of Joy,' representing shared happiness; 'Spirit of Authenticity,' focused on heritage and identity; 'Joy of Return,' highlighting the bond with land and origins; 'Light of the Path,' emphasizing values across generations; 'Blessing of the Home,' signifying family, stability, and unity; and 'Steps for the Future,' depicting progress rooted in tradition. Bilal utilized three photographs provided by the institute and three he captured himself.
Background and Festival Details
Bilal arrived in the United Arab Emirates in 2017 after beginning his design career in Kerala at the age of 18. He works alongside his father, Hameed KT, at the institute, and his previous work was featured by Dubai Culture at Expo 2020. Nadia Al Sahlawi, head of marketing at the institute, noted that Bilal has brought Heritage Days themes to life for several years and that the stamps provide his work with a lasting legacy. The 23rd Sharjah Heritage Days festival was held from February 4 to 15, 2026, in the Heart of Sharjah. The event featured participation from 27 countries, included over 265 artisans, showcased 40 crafts, and hosted 1,173 performances.
