The National Centre for Statistics and Information in Oman has released the results of its inaugural AI-powered Household Income and Expenditure Survey, providing a comprehensive look at the living conditions of the country's expatriate population. Presented in early September 2026, the report highlights the financial landscape for more than 2.3 million foreign workers, who represent approximately 43.5% of Oman's total population.

Data indicates the average monthly income for a non-Omani household stands at
RO 717.15, with salary contributions accounting for RO 686.38 of that total. Average monthly expenditures for these households are recorded at
RO 402.48. Housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels represent the largest financial burden, consuming
48% of total spending. Other significant expenditures include food and beverages at 16.5%, transport at 6.6%, education at 5.2%, and restaurants and accommodation at 5.25%. In comparison to 2018 figures, expat household income has grown by 7.3%, increasing from RO 668.6, while Omani household income saw an 18.5% rise to RO 1,839.3. During the same timeframe, expat spending grew by 11%. The per-capita monthly income for non-Omanis is reported at
RO 172.73, with urban residents averaging RO 171.32 and rural residents averaging RO 126.72.
Disparities persist between employment sectors, with government-sector expats earning an average of
RO 1,667.97 compared to
RO 687.58 in the private sector. As of July 2026, there were
39,627 expats employed in the government sector and
1,406,283 in the private sector. The occupational breakdown for the expat workforce includes 700,039 in principal, auxiliary, and engineering roles; 617,202 in service sectors; 118,968 in sales; 94,103 in administrative, director, or managerial positions; and 100,894 in industrial, chemical, and food industries. The findings are particularly significant for the Indian community, which constitutes the largest expatriate group in Oman at approximately
550,000 individuals. The NCSI utilized AI technology to expedite data collection and analysis, intending the survey to serve as a key instrument for Vision 2040 planning and to refine calculations for the national Consumer Price Index.
