Saudi Arabia issued a historic emergency alert on September 15, 2026, in the holy city of Mecca al-Mukarramah, marking the first time such a warning has been recorded in the city's history. The Saudi Civil Defense's National Early Warning Platform issued the potential threat alert, which was also extended to the Jeddah Governorate and Taif, following the outbreak of war between Iran and the Middle East. The alert was rescinded by the Civil Defense shortly after it was issued.
During the active warning period,
residents and expatriates were instructed to remain indoors in rooms without glass, stay away from open areas, windows, and roofs, and avoid bridges or high structures while driving. Authorities also appealed to the public not to photograph the events via official channels.
This incident follows recent cross-border attacks involving Houthi ballistic missiles and drones originating from Yemen. These attacks targeted the southern Saudi cities of Khamis Mushait, Abha, and Taif, resulting in 13 civilian injuries and damage to seven homes and two vehicles. While Saudi air defense systems have successfully intercepted all incoming threats to date, the situation has heightened security concerns for Umrah and Hajj pilgrims. The emergency alert caused significant concern among the thousands of Indian expatriates living in Jeddah and the surrounding areas, many of whom sought shelter with their families upon receiving the digital notifications. This marks a rare moment of fear in the region, particularly due to the location of the alert in Mecca.
